3:28 p.m. - 2009-02-23 The lectures taught the movement of Milan systemic family therapy, its important concepts and techniques. To learn the history of its movement, it helped us to have more comprehensive understanding on a theory's development and also the philosophy behind that directs how the therapist look at problems and how they would make changes on it. The philosophy of the Milan model such as "news of a difference", "meaning making", relationships exploring, and the belief on second-order cybernetic thinking, etc. leads great impact on our values as a helping professional nowsday that we believe we are the part of a system of our client's family, and help facilitating or finding their strengths to make changes or difference of their problems themselves instead of that to be a professional only to solve their problem by instructing or directing the solution. The techniques or strategyies in the helping progress of the Milan are also emphasized. Circularity is an important and useful techniques for the therapist to explore the needs and thought of clients, to help them seeing differences or looking for a new meaning on their problem, and also, as a way of engagement for the therapist with clients because it carries the function of the skills of reflection of content and feelings and also reframing. It also help the therapist to be aware of their questionning which may based on their conceptualization to the problem and what they would like to lead on the differences. Making news of difference and meaning is sometimes difficult in practices. The therapist should be very clear on what tracks they would like to go through in the problems. The therapist needs to have a high sevsitivity on what is going on in the family relationship and its dynamics of systems. As for the clients, I would wonder if the new meaning created would really be accepted by themselves all the time as we cannot denied that people may know the solution of problem somtimes, but they may not be as easy as we think to take a congurent action on it. So, the concept on "time" in Milan model may explain the above and let us to reflect the meaning on our work, the desire of what we would like the outcomes is by our intervention...that may not be in short, but may be for the future in long....That's the important meaning of our work as a helping professional...
